DRAG ME TO THE PITS OF HELL

Image
At the very same time I was dealing with some hardships, my girlfriends sister, another close friend of mine and my neighbor were going through personal issues as well. It took me half the day to pull myself together through prayer, supplication and meditation. I felt ready to tackle the rest of the day, when I received concurrent texts from friends seeking prayers and spiritual support. I’d just finished reading Psalm 119:81 which says, “I am worn out waiting for your rescue, but I have put my hope in your word.” It seemed the exact words needed to comfort everyone seeking wisdom and guidance to face the day. Sometimes, even as you’re searching for the right words to comfort those in need, you wonder if it will have any impact on them. You find yourself suddenly becoming a bit emotionally invested and before you know it, you’re being dragged into hell, without a passport. I imagined Jesus having to endure so much, even as He to helped others, while feeling the weight of the world on …

LATE NIGHT (s)TALKER

I love to sleep. I look forward to getting at least a good 8-10 hours of sleep each night. However last night or this morning, I woke up at 4:30 and couldn’t go back to sleep. Now here’s some background on my bedtime prep that allows me a full nights sleep. I have an early dinner around five, which gives me ample time to slow down and prepare for bed time. I will make a golden milk drink to relax me, followed by a long bath. Then there’s prayers and meditation right before the lights come off, which is around 9pm. I stuck to my usual routine last night, but my eyes flew open and I couldn’t go back to sleep. I laid awake in the dark, my mind wandering from one thing to the next. From a meteor hitting the East coast to what my pups dreamt about, which led me to think about the times when Jesus had a hard time sleeping. With the weight of the world on His shoulders as the fulfillment of the prophecy drew closer, He often sought the company of His Dad. Mark 1:35 says, “And rising very ear…

ARE YOU THERE GOD, IT'S ME JILL?

In Stephen’s Hawking’s new and final book, “Brief Answers to Big Questions,” he writes, “There is no God. No one directs the universe.” He further adds,"For centuries, it was believed that disabled people like me were living under a curse that was inflicted by God," he adds. "I prefer to think that everything can be explained another way, by the laws of nature.” Of all the information Hawking’s presents in his last book, this one left me a little stumped. There’s many people who doubt the existence of God. After all, if there were a God, why would he allow all this suffering in the world, innocent lives lost due to school shootings, famine and disease. However, it’s by God’s grace things aren’t as bad it can actually be, because let’s face, it could get a whole lot worse, probably worse than we could ever imagine. I have a few friends who believe in the “Big Bang Theory” and science for the existence of man kind, but when asked can’t build a credible argument. One frien…

I GOTTA FEELING

Image
I recently had a colorful conversation with a friend of mine who related to me how horrible the last few years had been for him. From 2016 till present day, it had been nothing but a string of death, disappointments, financial struggles, break ups, separations, cancer battles and car accidents. He went on for a while, but at one point in the middle of the conversation, he continued, “Over the winter, you said, I got this feeling that this will be our year. We’re gonna take some serious wins and come out with the last laugh. Well, since then, my sister died, I lost my job, I’m broke and the kids are sick.” Let me clarify, when he related this information to me, he said it with humor, which made me laugh hysterically, because I do recall the conversation and me telling him I have a really good feeling about this year (2018). At the time, our life situations weren’t going quite the way we thought it would, but even though it appeared that way in the natural, spiritually it gave me the fe…

WHEN THE DEVILS ON YOUR BACK

Image
Florence and the Machine sang one of my favorite songs titled, “Shake It Off.” The chorus of the song goes, “Shake it off, whoa, when its time to dance when the devils on your back so shake him off.” We’re all aware of the glory and goodness of God. His love and goodness carries us through the darkest days, but what about the devil? The devil doesn’t show up wearing red, with a pitch fork and horns. That would be the tabasco guy. The devil disguises himself as our worldly desires. From love, money, fame, fortune, perfect bodies, you name it, the devil smells our desires and entices us with ways to acquire them. In doing so, he let’s us know that our happiness is first and it shouldn’t matter how we acquire our desires, as long as we get them. Therefore, self focus takes a front seat. We have to give the devil serious street cred, he’s always working to make our perception of what we need to make us happy, as hellish as possible, once we fall victim to his schemes.

When we fall for his …

Together Again

I finally said YES, to His urging of getting out and enjoying my life. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve declined His offers. Boy was He patient! There was one time. I took him up on his offer to meet for dinner at a really lovely place in the city. He knows I enjoy trendy restaurants and good food, so he did his homework and found a place in the East Village. I went all the way to the city, dressed up and suddenly consumed with panic, I stood Him up. I felt bad, but I couldn’t have dinner with someone that wasn’t my husband. Later that evening, I sent a heart felt reason why I couldn’t take it. Waiting to hear his disappointment, he instead understood and said, “He would wait for me to become more comfortable with Him.” Well, laa-dee-dah!  He also said he wasn’t going anywhere, unless I gave up first. HA! If I had a penny for every time I heard a man say, well I’d be stinking rich! I didn’t understand why he would say that because we were childhood friends. Yes, life took crazy tw…

JUST QUIT!

Vontae Davis, cornerback for the Buffalo Bills, decided not to play the second of the game and retire at the same time. He went back to the locker room, got dressed and left the stadium with no regrets. Lily*, began a conversation with my close friend at the sports bar, as I watched this event take place with the Buffalo Bills. Lily got blessed with two job offers, one on her own and the other through my friend. The first job prospect is a safety job, where many of the employees are there for at least 30-40 years, without much mobility. The other job for a small, rather prosperous and lucrative company, offers mobility, but flexibility to work on the weekends. My friend gave her the best advice, which was taking a leap of faith and taking the job at the small business. A sense of peace washed over her, from the advice to which she added, “Something told me I should take the job at the smaller business, because Father God put it on me great things will come from it.” A few touchdowns l…
